Toasty thin midlayer Review by Susanna on 2/15/2017
Bought this as a mid layer to go skiing.

Having not been skiing for 15 years, all I remembered was being cold, in the hotel and on the ski lifts. I may have gone a bit overboard in buying base and midlayers. I wore this hoody everyday over a thinner base layer and on a snow day added a fleece gillet. It didn't smell (i do have a bad sense of smell... but no one complained!) and didn't wear any of the others i packed off with me.

The reasons for the four stars in design is the light green fabric shows off the sweet marks, but dried clear. All black would be preferable. (it was warmer on an afternoon, but had no where to store my hoodie on the mountain so just kept on wearing it.) i also found the hood didn't fully cover my ears on the one day i was cold enough to want extra protection under my helmet. I think this will mean it will fall down to easily when not wearing a helmet in windy conditions. I am probably going to be buying an air hole baraclarva which will render it redundant.

Overall i don't retreat buying this hoody, and it kept me more than toasty in Austria (temperatures around -10 to 5 degrees outdoors)

The Azog jacket is a technical mid-layer jacket with hood that incorporates yak wool's exceptional performance properties in a performance mid-layer for the first time.

During the development process, our designer and outdoor athletes set out to create a lightweight technical mid-layer jacket for hard mountain days' skiing, climbing, mountaineering and trekking.

The culmination of painstaking research and a rigorous field testing process, the Azog offers what our athletes deem essential in a mid-layer: breathability, added warmth, durability and protection - all in a design that permits total freedom of movement.

It’s made with our Stratam 350 dual-layer fabric. It features superfine yak wool in a terry loop construction on the inside to insulate in cold conditions and wick moisture during intense workouts.

As an outer layer in milder weather, the yak wool's moisture transfer abilities and breathability excel, and while the outer surface of Sorona is not 100% wind or water proof - properties that we believe are best kept to your hard-shell - it does offer the protection required in milder conditions. A dash of elastane provides enhanced stretch.

We've packed the Azog with useful features too: thumb-loops, stash pockets and a stowaway fitted helmet compatible hood.

Each time you step out on the mountain you need to be ready for all conditions. The Azog has been developed for versatility, to perform whatever the conditions.
Fabric & Care
The inner terry loop construction of the Stratam 350 fabric, made using our very own specially sourced superfine yak wool, insulates in cold conditions while transporting moisture in intense moments. As an outer layer in milder weather, the yak wool's moisture transfer abilities and breathability excel, while the durable outer surface of Sorona is built to handle pack straps and harnesses. A dash of elastane provides enhanced stretch.

  • Versatile and lightweight. Front and back panels in Hima-Layer™ Stratam 350, with our Original 230 100% yak wool fabric in the hood and side panels, provide warmth, breathability and moisture management precisely where it is needed. Both fabrics offer exceptional warmth for weight.
  • Durable. Abrasion-resistant outer surface of Sorona handles pack straps and harnesses.

CARING FOR YOUR JACKET
  • Cool machine wash on wool setting at 30˚c.
  • Line dry in the shade.

  • As long as you follow our care instructions, any shrinkage will be minimal.
    Product Design
    • 3D fit. Cut to fit close to the body and designed to permit full range of motion, when going up or down the mountain.
    • Fitted cut for effective layering.
    • Clean lines means you'll look sharp on down days.
    • Hide-away thumb loops for easy layer removal.
    • Side panels in Hima-Layer™ Original 230 for breathability and improved movement.
    • Hima-Layer™ Stratam 350gsm fabric in front and back for added warmth and protection.
    • The helmet compatible hood has two modes. Up: over your head as a base layer under your helmet to stop snow going down your jacket. Down: When rolled away and attached using the restrictor buttons, the hood fills the gap around the neck like a baffle to stop cold air draughts.
    • Two large external pockets with YKK zips. Two large internal stash pockets.
    • Kora logo embroidery & Kora insignia detail on wrist.
    • Flat-lock seams to reduce bulk.
    What The Experts Say
    Gear Junkie
“Of the dozens of “hoodies” I test each season, this immediately became a favorite due to its weather blocking properties and versatile little hood. With the Kora baselayer underneath, I’m not afraid to head out in the Azog with just a trucker hat and gloves, due to its natural wind- and water-resistance, even running at 9,000 feet near the Continental Divide.”

"A surprisingly lightweight and tough mid-layer that does a fine job as an outer layer in dry weather, too. I found it to be comfortable on some blustery early-morning trail runs in Griffith Park and as a comfortable outer or mid layer in colder climates this winter, including one especially frigid weekend in Connecticut when the wind chill brought the temperature well below zero. The jacket’s functional features like thumb-loops and stowaway pockets are great whether you’re hiking, running, or just walking the streets looking for a bite to eat. And I’ll just note that the visual design of the jacket was stylish enough to get compliments on a recent trip to Paris (!), so you may want to consider that, too."

“My first wear with the Azog jacket was a night walk (cold 50s) swapping out my Patagonia Nano Puff jacket. The Azog jacket was just as warm and comfortable. But when it got warmer after a mile into the walk (uphill), it was a lot more breathable than my Patagonia jacket – I normally have to remove my Patagonia jacket.
On colder days, the stowaway hood came into use as I sometimes forget my knit cap. Since the Azog jacket is a mid-layer, I was able to wear it with my Patagonia Merino-Air Crew base layer for extremely cold days or even skiing at the slopes in Lake Tahoe. Alternatively, I wore the Azog jacket under my Patagonia Nano Puff jacket – mid and top layers. Layers, base-mid-top, a perfect solution for the changing weather in Northern California."

    Need help with sizing?

We've organised our sizes into convenient categories (small, medium, large, etc), but of course we're all different shapes. It's quite normal to find your measurements fall into more than one size category.

So what do you do if some of your measurements say you're a small and others say you're a medium? Well, some measurements are more important than others.

For tops, you should choose the size which matches your chest measurement. For bottoms, it's the waist measurement.
