Perfect undertop for cold places Review by David Jenkins on 2/19/2017
Tested in a fresh head-on NE wind with snow flurries on the South Downs of England over two days. Wonderfully warm; soft and comfortable next to the skin. Also Stayed fresh when I warmed up going up hill.

All-around convincing product Review by Sebastian on 6/17/2016
Recently bought the Shola Crew for a hiking trip in Norway, and it was about the only layer I needed except for my rain jacket. When the first day hit us with an exhausting climb in heavy rain, the Shola Crew kept me warm even though I soaked it in sweat and there was no chance for my jacket to breathe. All in all, it kept its promise 100% and will allow me to cut back on clothing on the next trip.

Great Base Layer Review by Jay Hoggatt on 1/5/2016
I have three outings with the Shola Crew and thus far I'm impressed. The first things I noticed are that the crew neck isn't extremely large and wide which is a great thing for me and the arms are long enough on the XL for my 6' 2" frame. Another plus is that it doesn't stretch out with use like some of my marino base layers.

Overall I'm very satisfied with my purchase.

I Love This Shirt!! Review by Boone Wagner on 1/4/2016
I love my Kora!! I am so happy the crew neck was offered. I have the quarter zip too. I really like the crew because it lends itself to being a more universal base layer. If you don't need to regulate your body temperature as a priority, the crew is the right choice. The yak wool is so soft and far surpasses my merino in every way.

Supreme Quality & Comfort | Five Stars Review by Luccini Shurod on 1/4/2016
I enjoy comfort in the kind of places that people are least likely to have "comfort." And the quality structure in both material and design is why I would proudly and adamantly recommend this product that has achieved perfection in keeping a person warm and also comfortable in the coldest conditions, but also relevant in common temperate conditions as well. I congratulate Kora's design, quality, and fit. And I look forward to having more products from Kora in the years to come.

Shola in the Japanese Autumn Review by Matt S on 11/22/2015
I admit it, I'm obsessed about weight and performance, as a one bagger. And yak gives one of the best weight to warmth ratios around*. When you add in it's superior wicking and anti-microbial properties it is, as they say, a no brainer choice for us lightweight travellers. So how does it perform in reality? Well I spent a week in Japan this Autumn going from wet, cold and rainy in Kyoto to the windchill of crossing a very bleak Lake Ashi up in the Hakone ranges, and everything in between. Although I brought a mid layer, almost all of the time I just wore my Shola top, and threw on a goretex shell as needed. That's a very useful property when you're going from cold to warm and don't want carry a heap of different clothes. Next big test will is December on Kilimanjaro where, once again, you've got a range of climates to contend with. About the only thing I'd like to see would be thumb-holes, but that's a really minor issue. All in all two thumbs up. :)

*Quiviut (or Musk ox) is about the only thing that beats yak and yes I do have a quiviut piece. :)

Availability: In stock

Explore the outdoors in comfort from autumn to spring in our Shola Crew.

This versatile base layer top is made from our luxuriously soft yak wool fabric, Hima-Layer™ 230 Original.

It adapts to your body's needs, keeping you wonderfully warm in cold weather, but dry and cool during intense workouts.

A dependable favourite you’ll pull on again and again, whether you’re venturing into the wild or relaxing at home.
Fabric & Care
Yak wool evolved over millennia to protect against the extreme Himalayan climate.

We've spent years transforming this astonishing fibre into a range of cutting-edge technical fabrics for outdoor adventurers, through our in-house development programme Hima-Layer™.

This crew top is made with our Hima-Layer Original 230 fabric, using yak wool sourced from nomad families on the Qinghai Tibet plateau in the Himalayas.

  • Even better than merino. It’s 66% more breathable and 40% warmer, weight for weight.
  • Wicks moisture efficiently and allows sweat vapour to escape from your skin, so you won’t overheat or feel clammy.
  • Naturally anti-bacterial fabric smells fresher longer - so you can pack light.
  • Built-in 40+ UPF sun protection.
  • Feels soft like cashmere - and there’s no itch.

Caring for your garment

  • Cool machine wash on wool setting at 30˚c.
  • Line dry in the shade.

As long as you follow our care instructions, any shrinkage will be minimal.
Product Design
  • Ergonomic fit allows you to move your body freely.
  • Extra-long body length keeps your mid-section covered when you stretch, twist and bend.
  • Sleeves are long with extra articulation in the armhole, so you can reach and raise your arms without pulling or lifting the rest of the garment.
  • Flat-locked seams reduce chafing. Positioned off the shoulder, so they won't rub against pack straps.
  • Low profile crew neck collar creates a clean neckline.
  • Tape on the cuff depicts contours of the Himalayas and colours of Tibetan prayer flags.
  • Contrast seams circle sleeves and body to signify a kora - the devotional practice of walking around a sacred mountain.
What The Experts Say
ColdOutdoorsman.com
“In addition to the Shola crew’s comfort, the baselayer’s also quite warm. I tested it on several snowshoeing excursions with nothing but a fleece and lightweight jacket over the top and never got cold.
It’s tempting to think some of that could have been attributed to the moderate activity, but I also wore the Kora Shola crew a few days to pickup the kids from school, and where I would’ve normally been chattering my teeth standing outside talking with other moms, I never even got a chill. The extended length helped with this, as there’s enough material to tuck the top into your pants and avoid getting cold drafts up your back…Interestingly, in spite of its warmth during high-energy activities, I never felt sweaty wearing the Kora Shola crew. The yak wool seemed a bit more breathable and had slightly better wicking properties than even merino-wool tops.”

Our ShoLa Crew is new, so we don't have any more expert reviews to share just yet. In the meantime, here's some praise for our ShoLa Zip base layer - same outstanding fabric and cut - but with a front zip for added ventilation.

Gear Junkie
"Exceptional. Cut to an athletic fit, this 100 percent yak wool layer is warm, quick drying, and comfortable."

UltralightInsights.com
"It feels softer against my skin than merino and softer to the touch, like cashmere. It is finely woven, and shows no signs of pilling. For active winter sports in colder weather, worn under a shell jacket or alone on warmer days, I was very pleased with its warmth, breathability, and comfort. In my opinion, it’s a measure better than a comparable merino wool baselayer. From a cost standpoint, the Shola costs about $40 more than the Icebreaker 260 Zip-T I compared it with. People reading this review will ask if the extra warmth and performance is worth the extra cost. My response is you basically get what you pay for; you will not be disappointed with the Kora Shola.”

Examiner.com
Awarded 5 stars. “The author, who is very sensitive to lamb’s wool, was pleasantly surprised when the zip was put on. Immediately it became evident that not only is yak wool not itchy, it has a luxurious feel. The base layer fit true to size and the length allowed the top to be tucked well into the author’s ski pants. The sleeves are extra-long which allow increased range of motion without riding up the arms. Worn on a 20-degree day under a mid-weight ski jacket the yak wool base layer was all that was needed to keep the author warm all day. The breathability was appreciated during some out of bounds hiking and the front quarter zip can be used for additional ventilation when needed.”

Grough
Awarded 'Best in Test'. "Warm enough to be worn on its own on a cool day and makes a good layering base when up in the mountains in poor conditions."

Gear We Are
Awarded ‘Recommended Product’. “If I’m being asked to part with £105 for a baselayer, I want it to work some minor miracles. I’d want it to be massively warmer, much more breathable, better wicking, lighter and less likely to get smelly than any other baselayer I owned. And I’d want it to look good too. So, imagine my amazement as this new Yak Wool (Yes, Yak. The hairy mountain beasts from the Himalayas) ticked all of those boxes and lived up to some bold claims by its new British manufacturer.”

Scotland Outdoors
Awarded five stars. “I wore the yak wool baselayer when cycling, running and Munro bagging. And so far there has been no sweaty whiff whatsoever...At no point did I feel damp on my skin and even after exercising, when I stopped to get into the car and drive for an hour, I stayed warm and dry.”

The Great Outdoors
“It feels very soft and comfortable next to the skin, wicks moisture fast and dries fairly quickly...The top doesn’t smell after continuous wear – I slept in it on the overnight trips, so it was worn for 30-plus hours non-stop – or after strenuous sweaty exercise... if you want a cool weather base layer this is one of the best around."

A Luxury Travel Blog
“These garments are incredibly warm and will serve as an excellent base layer in even the most extreme environments.”

Washing Machine Post
"Achieves everything promised by the manufacturer and then some....if you're a fan of merino, or sad enough to be still clad in polyester, you might be happy to join the vanguard of odourless winter toastiness with a covering of yak wool; it just gets better and better."

Need help with sizing?

We've organised our sizes into convenient categories (small, medium, large, etc), but of course we're all different shapes. It's quite normal to find your measurements fall into more than one size category.

So what do you do if some of your measurements say you're a small and others say you're a medium? Well, some measurements are more important than others.

For tops, you should choose the size which matches your chest measurement. For bottoms, it's the waist measurement.
